Mari Kawamura is a distinguished concert pianist recognized for her inventive performances and dynamic interpretations. She explores the full expressive range of the piano, from virtuosic agility to resonant, spectral sounds and unpitched noise. Her versatile repertoire spans classical composers such as William Byrd, Scriabin, and Toru Takemitsu, alongside collaborations with contemporary artists, premiering works by Joseph Bourdeau, Lil Lacy, and Anthony Vine.
Kawamura has performed internationally at renowned venues including Carnegie Mellon University, Piano Spheres, MONK Space in Los Angeles, and the Center for New Music in San Francisco. She has appeared at major festivals such as Tanglewood, Spoleto USA, Darmstadt International Summer Course, and SICPP in Boston, where her performance of Xenakis’ Dikthas was described as “an unrelenting volcanic eruption” by NewMusicBox.
She holds degrees from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts, London’s Royal Academy of Music, and the University of California, San Diego, where she earned a Doctorate in Contemporary Music Performance. Her academic research centers on ma, an ancient Japanese concept of space and time, exploring its manifestation as “charged stillness” across global musical traditions.
